What It Is

Seamless pipe, no weld line to worry about

Seamless steel pipe starts life as a solid round billet. The billet is heated, pierced through the centre by a rotary piercing mill, then rolled and drawn out until it reaches the diameter and wall thickness called for. Because nothing is rolled and welded shut, the finished pipe has no longitudinal seam anywhere along its length.

That matters when a line runs hot, sits under pressure, or gets bent and machined after it leaves the yard. With a uniform wall and no weld to qualify or inspect, seamless is what most engineers write into the spec for boiler, refinery, hydraulic, and high-pressure process work.

We keep seamless pipe on hand at our Montreal yard in a range of diameters and schedules, both new and prime surplus. Looking for a broader selection instead? Browse our steel pipe for sale in Montreal, or see piling pipe and pile tubes if your project is foundation work.

Grades & Specs

Seamless pipe grades we supply

Send us the callout on your drawing. These are the specifications we handle most often.

01

ASTM A106 Grade B

The workhorse for high-temperature service. Seamless carbon steel pipe used in steam, boiler, and refinery lines. Grades A and C available on request.

02

ASTM A53 Type S

Seamless pipe for general mechanical and pressure use, in Grade A and Grade B. Common in plumbing, compressed air, and structural runs.

03

API 5L

Line pipe for oil, gas, and water transmission. Available seamless in Grade B and higher strength X grades.

04

ASTM A333

Low-temperature service pipe, most often Grade 6, where the line has to stay tough in cold Quebec conditions.

05

ASTM A519 Mechanical Tubing

Seamless carbon and alloy mechanical tubing for cylinders, machined parts, and rolling stock.

06

Surplus & Used Seamless

Prime surplus and quality used seamless pipe, graded and sorted, at a fraction of mill pricing.

Comparison

Seamless pipe compared to welded pipe

Welded pipe made today is good product, and plenty of jobs run on it. Here is how the two differ so you can tell which one your job actually needs.

Applications

Where seamless pipe earns its keep

Anywhere a seam would be a liability, or a line has to be inspected, bent, or machined after installation, seamless is usually the call:

  • Steam & boiler lines
  • Refinery & process piping
  • Hydraulic & pneumatic systems
  • Oil & gas transmission
  • Heat exchangers
  • Machined & bored components

FAQ

Seamless steel pipe questions

What is seamless steel pipe?

Seamless steel pipe is pipe formed from a solid steel billet that is pierced and rolled out to size, so it has no welded seam running along its length. The wall is uniform all the way around, which is why it is specified for pressure, high temperature, and mechanical service.

How is seamless pipe manufactured?

A round billet is heated and pushed over a piercing point in a rotary piercing mill, which opens a hole through the centre. The hollow shell is then elongated and reduced on a mandrel or plug mill until it hits the required outside diameter and wall thickness, and it is finished either hot or cold drawn.

Is seamless pipe stronger than welded pipe?

Seamless has no weld seam, so there is no heat-affected zone to test or qualify, and it handles high pressure and high heat well. Modern ERW pipe is strong and code-approved for a great many uses, so the real answer comes down to the pressure rating, the governing spec, and your budget. Send us the spec and we will tell you what fits.

What is ASTM A106 Grade B pipe?

ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. Grade B is the most widely used of the three grades and shows up constantly in steam, boiler, and refinery piping. Grades A and C are available when a job calls for them.

What is the difference between A53 and A106?

A53 covers pipe for general mechanical and pressure use and comes seamless (Type S) or welded (Type E and F). A106 is seamless only and is written for high-temperature service, with tighter chemistry and mechanical requirements. Some pipe is dual certified to both.

What sizes and schedules do you carry?

We stock seamless pipe from small bore up to roughly 24 inches, in schedules from SCH 40 through SCH 80, SCH 160, and XXS. Check our pipe chart for dimensions, then send us your list and we will confirm what is in the yard.

Do you sell surplus and used seamless pipe?

Yes. A large share of our stock is prime surplus and quality used pipe, sorted and graded, which usually lands well under mill pricing. We supply new seamless pipe as well when the job calls for it.
