What is metal tubing?
Metal tubing is hollow metal stock made in round, square, or rectangular profiles and sized by its actual outside dimensions and wall thickness. It is used mostly for structure, framing, and mechanical parts. Tubing is made in steel, stainless, aluminum, and copper; our focus is carbon steel tubing.
What is the difference between a tube and a pipe?
Tube is specified by its true outside diameter and wall thickness, holds tighter tolerances, and comes in several shapes. Pipe is round, specified by nominal pipe size and schedule, and is built mainly to carry fluids. That is why 2 inch pipe measures 2.375 inches outside while 2 inch tube measures exactly 2 inches.
How is square and rectangular tubing measured?
By outside width, then outside height, then wall thickness. A 4 x 2 x 1/4 tube is 4 inches by 2 inches on the outside with a 1/4 inch wall. Lighter tube is often called out by gauge instead, such as 11 gauge, which is 0.120 inch.
What is HSS tubing?
HSS stands for hollow structural section. It is structural steel tube in round, square, or rectangular shapes, usually made to ASTM A500 in the United States or CSA G40.21 350W in Canada, and used for columns, beams, and frames.
What is DOM tubing?
DOM means drawn over mandrel. It starts as welded tube under ASTM A513 Type 5 and is then cold drawn over a mandrel, which tightens the dimensions and smooths out the weld so it behaves much like seamless tube. It is common in cylinders, bushings, and machined parts.
